When does the Flat season start? In Britain the turf season traditionally starts with the Lincoln meeting at Doncaster, on Saturday 3 April in 2027, though the BHA list has a few turf Flat cards from Bath on Good Friday, 26 March. In Ireland the Curragh brings the Flat back on Saturday 20 March 2027. The all-weather runs all year.

Look, there's no horses-to-follow list here, just a Flat season preview built from dates and public form you can check yourself.

When does the Flat season start in 2027? Turf, all-weather, UK and Ireland

The all-weather races all year, so when people ask for the Flat racing start date they mean turf. I checked every date against the official lists on 5 October 2026.

That's new: in 2025 and 2026 no British turf Flat race was run before Lincoln day (Sporting Life results). Over the whole of 2027 the BHA list has 549 Flat turf fixtures and 334 on the all-weather.

When does the Flat season start in Ireland?

The Curragh opened the Irish turf Flat season in each of the last two years, on 16 March 2025 and 15 March 2026, with the Irish Lincolnshire on the card both times. In 2027 the Curragh's first fixture is Saturday 20 March. The 2027 race programme isn't out yet. Dundalk's all-weather keeps Irish Flat racing going through the winter. For the Irish meetings week by week, see my Irish horse racing tips page, and for how the all-weather works, my all-weather racing guide.

The Lincoln: the first big handicap of the turf season

The Lincoln is a heritage handicap over a straight mile (about 1,600 metres) at Doncaster, which bills it as the grand opening of the British Flat season. Here are the last twelve runnings (no race in 2020 because of Covid).

Year (stall)Winner (age)Weight (OR)SPTrainer
2026 (2)Urban Lion (5)9-6 (98)9/1Jack Channon
2025 (3)Godwinson (5)9-4 (94)15/2William Haggas
2024 (2)Mr Professor (5)8-8 (92)33/1Dominic Ffrench Davis
2023 (12)Migration (7)9-12 (107)18/1David Menuisier
2022 (4)Johan (5)9-4 (102)28/1Mick Channon
2021 (10)Haqeeqy (4)9-5 (100)9/2John and Thady Gosden
2019 (17)Auxerre (4)9-3 (100)5/2 favCharlie Appleby
2018 (10)Addeybb (4)9-2 (99)5/1William Haggas
2017 (20)Bravery (4)9-1 (100)20/1David O'Meara
2016 (22)Secret Brief (4)9-4 (100)12/1Charlie Appleby
2015 (15)Gabrial (6)9-0 (100)12/1Richard Fahey
2014 (3)Ocean Tempest (5)9-3 (102)20/1John Ryan

Compiled from each year's published result. Weight is the weight allotted; Haqeeqy and Migration had apprentice claims and carried 8-12 and 9-9. Twelve races is a small sample, but a few things stand out:

  • Prices. Only one favourite won (Auxerre in 2019), and seven of the twelve winners went off at 12/1 or bigger.
  • Age. Five winners were four and five were five, including four of the last five.
  • Ratings. Nine of the twelve were rated 98 to 102.
  • Yards. William Haggas and Charlie Appleby have won it twice each.

The Lincoln draw

With 17 to 22 runners on a straight mile, the draw always gets talked about. Five of these winners came from stalls 1 to 7, four from 8 to 15 and three from 16 or higher. The last three came from stalls 2, 3 and 2, but the 2016 and 2017 winners came from 22 and 20, so there's no reliable bias; where the pace is matters more. More in my draw bias guide and, for the Irish Lincolnshire, the Curragh draw bias page.

The Classics picture: Guineas, Derby and Oaks

How the 2026 British Classics went, with official SPs:

St Leger (12 Sep 2026)Highwayman11/1Joseph O'BrienChristmas Day, 7/4: 9th

No favourite won any of the five. One season proves nothing, but the form held up: Bow Echo went on to win the St James's Palace Stakes (5/6 fav) and the Sussex Stakes (10/11 fav). Gstaad won the Irish 2,000 Guineas at 4/11. Precise, beaten as favourite at Newmarket, won the Irish 1,000 Guineas and the Coronation Stakes. Christmas Day was second to Benvenuto Cellini in the Irish Derby.

The two-year-old form so far

Next year's Classic horses are this year's two-year-olds. The British and Irish juvenile Group 1s up to 4 October 2026, plus the Group 2 Champagne and Royal Lodge:

Sun Goddess has won three Group 1s at six and seven furlongs. Desert Castle and Darkness Falls were both among the Dewhurst acceptors for Saturday 10 October (Sporting Life, 5 October 2026). The Dewhurst, the Fillies' Mile and Doncaster's Futurity Trophy (Saturday 24 October) go into this table once they've been run.

I'm not printing ante-post Guineas or Derby prices in October; they're guesswork about how horses train on. Dated market leaders go in when I refresh this page before the season.

Yards to watch in the spring: trainer strike rates

Some yards come out firing in the spring. I went through every British and Irish turf Flat race from Lincoln day to 30 April in 2025 and 2026: 859 races and 8,610 runners. These are the ten trainers with the most winners.

TrainerRunnersWins (strike rate)1pt level stakes at SPWins 2025 / 2026
Joseph O'Brien19329 (15.0%)+4.64pts11 / 18

Johnny Murtagh10416 (15.4%)-28.71pts8 / 8
James Owen9716 (16.5%)+20.88pts9 / 7

Method: Sporting Life results, runners only. I left out abandoned races, jumps races (bumpers included) and one Arabian race. Profit is a 1pt win bet on every runner at industry SP (no Best Odds Guaranteed), with the two dead heats at half stakes. Across all 8,610 runners, 861 won (10.0%). Each yard's sample is only 64 to 236 runners, so treat it as a sketch.

The Gosdens and Charlie Appleby struck at about one in four but lost money at SP: the market knew all about them. Aidan O'Brien hit one in five and was down 37 points. Only three of the ten made a level-stakes profit, and only James Owen by much. William Haggas went from 13 winners from 37 runners in 2025 to 6 from 49 in 2026, which is why two springs are a starting point, not a system. The yards' full-season records are in my top horse racing trainers guide.

How I approach a new Flat season

I'm essentially a statistics/maths geek (I used to be a Quantitative Researcher at a Tier 1 investment bank), and if I am honest the start of any turf season is where the numbers are thinnest: horses first time out, ground all over the place and handicap marks nobody has tested yet.

My outsiders come from a new but proven system that picks out horses that have won or come close at a weight or mark higher than they're running at today. I've explained the idea in well handicapped horses. Alongside them the newsletter usually has a 'Banker' or two, which is just my name for a shorter-priced bet I rate as solid. And if I hear something from the stables, or the smart money moves, members get it. Some days there's nothing worth a bet, and that's a stinky day for the ponies, not a reason to force one.

The Lincoln shows why I like outsiders and each-way value: most of those winners were double-figure prices, and when one of those places you can still make more than an odds-on shot winning. None of it works without the boring bit, though. I stake in points (on a £100 bank, 1pt might be £5), I never chase or go all in because I've got a feeling, and if I'm not sure about a bet I skip it. Profit month to month is what counts, not the win rate. Understanding that losers are a thing is the key to being a winner longer term.

About The Guv'nor
I run Bolts Up Daily. I was a Quantitative Researcher at a Tier 1 Investment Bank (essentially a statistics and maths geek), and I now use those skills to analyse UK and Irish racing, profitably enough that most of your favourite bookies won't take a bet from me. Every horse I tip, I'm betting on myself, and every bet comes with a stake in points. I own racehorses too. Look, I can't guarantee every tip is going to win (anyone that can is a fraudster), but I care about profit, not strike rate.
